Hontsho Community School faces classroom shortage

The Hontsho Community School in Thimphu remained closed yesterday so that teachers, parents and education officials can sit together to discuss the acute classroom shortage that the school is facing.

The school was started in 2002 for pre-primary students. But every year it was upgraded by adding an extra class. By this year, the school became a primary school with students studying from pre-primary to class six.

The Hontsho community school consists of two semi-permanent traditional mud houses and this is not enough to house 190 students. The School’s Principal Dorji Dukpa said due to shortage of classrooms, some of the classes have to be conducted in open air.

The Dzongkhag Education Officer said a proposal has been submitted to construct three units during the tenth five year plan. He said the units will be ready by the next academic session.

To resolve the classroom shortage in the short term, the meeting decided that one of the classrooms will be partitioned to form two classrooms -one to be used by class five students and the other for class six students.
